What is GORE-TEX?
GORE-TEX was founded in 1958 by couple, Wilbert L. Gore and Genevieve Gore. In 1976, Wilbert and Genevieve started receiving orders for their fabric which was the first of its kind and now in 2025 it is a highly regarded multi billion dollar company. GORE-TEX is unique as the material made out of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE). Wilbert L. Gore was a chemical engineer, and discovered that expanded polytetrafluoroethylene a strong, porous, and lightweight membrane which is allows GORE-TEX materials to be windproof, breathable, and provide water-resistant to waterproof protection. GORE-TEX is now very well integrated into the outdoor clothing and equipment community and some of its top selling brands. You may have seen outdoor brands such as Arc’teryx, Burton, The North Face, Salomon, Hestra, Black Diamond, Helly Hansen and Merrell advertising their products as using GORE-TEX .

Staying dry and warm is a key part of your enjoyment of the outdoors no matter what activity it is. If your outdoor activity of choice is something you are well experienced in and you do regularly, GORE-TEX equipment will be worth the investment for you. However, if you are new to your outdoor activity of choice, it may be best to stick with budget friendly outdoor equipment before upgrading. However if GORE-TEX is in your budget, there is nothing and no one stopping you from indulging in excellent quality outdoor equipment.
